Hi David. What you harvest a piece of the cactus, the cactus cures itself, in a way that is oddly analogous to how a wound cures on a mammal - a dry scab forms, and within weeks the wound is dried over and cured. Eventually new growth may appear near the cut area, and meanwhile the cactus will probably also redirect energy to other parts of its body.
